Introducing new versions of popular operating systems at the WWDC conference, Apple is having a very active day. The company, which has made a revolution in the hardware world with the M1 processor it has developed, aims to carry this to the software side. Introduced for this purpose, macOS Monterey comes with many new features.
Yesterday the macOS 12 Monterey open beta version was officially released. Often the first beta versions have serious security vulnerabilities and problems, but they are removed with updates. In this article, we will show you how to download the macOS Monterey open beta. In the article, we will include both the main disk directly and creating a part of it and installing it there.
Download directly to main disk
Before proceeding with the installation process, it is useful to mention a few important points. If you are going to download macOS Monterey to your main disk, you need to back up all your data with Time Machine before downloading. This is because if something goes wrong with the Monterey version, you can restore your device to Big Sur without losing your data. For more detailed information about Time Machine backup, click here.
Also, make sure you have at least 20 GB of available storage space to install macOS 12.
To install macOS Monterey open beta on your main drive, you need to:
First of all, you need to enroll in Apple's beta program here. If you are already a member of the program, you can log in to your own account here.
After logging in, you choose macOS from among the operating systems on the page.
You click on the "Download the macOS Public Beta Access Utility" section under the Enroll your Mac paragraph.
You open the downloaded .dmg file and run the .pkg file inside it. If you have not backed up with Time Machine, the system will give you a warning message.
After completing the installation of the .pkg file, you open the Software Update section in the System Preferences (it will most likely be opened automatically when the installation is finished).
You start downloading macOS Monterey by clicking Upgrade Now in the section that opens.
The download takes a long time due to the file size. After it is finished, you install the beta version on your computer by clicking on "Install" and giving the necessary permissions.
Installing on track of main disk
In fact, the process of installing operating systems on part of the main storage is a situation that Windows users are intimately familiar with. If we don't have an external storage to back up your data, you can try macOS Monterey by partitioning your device's internal storage. For this you need to do:
In the first place, you open the Disk Utility program on your Mac. On the left, under Internal, are the parts of your disk.
If you are using a macOS High Sierra or higher supported device, you can click on your main disk and see that it is AFPS. At this stage, all you need to do to select the new partition is to click on the Disk Partition button in the upper middle part.
If your disk is not APFS but formatted to macOS Extended, then you need to click on the partitions in the upper right corner. In this option, you have to choose the name and volume of the partition you will create. Beta versions are generally larger than 10 GB. For this reason, we recommend that you choose the volume of your partition as at least 30 GB.
In the small window that opens, you can name the new partition and click "Add" to create it. Since the storage format of your disk is APFS, the volume is already shared by both the main and the partition you created.
Now you have a new partition and you can try macOS Monterey open beta by installing it on this disk.
All you have to do to switch between disk partitions is to press and hold the Option key every time you start the device.
