HomepageArticlesPrograms that Civil Engineers Should Know

There are many programs used in Civil Engineering . Due to the Technological Revolution, the number of software serving Civil Engineering needs is increasing. Here is a list of software that has been used exorbitantly by many Civil Engineers all over the world. Regardless of the ranking, these 10 software are very useful in Construction projects.

Although there are several sub-disciplines such as Transportation Engineering, Structural Design, Surveying, Geo-technology Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction planning, it is a list of the comprehensive list software used in general.

1) AUTOCAD (for Drafting)

AUTOCAD is one of the basic programs for the preparation and documentation of construction projects developed by Autodesk. You can see this software usage in almost all structural design consultancy and especially in companies in India. AUTOCAD 3D version is also available for 3D Modeling.

2) STAAD PRO (For Design and Analysis)

When it comes to designing and analyzing a building, STAAD PRO is a program preferred by many professionals in the field of construction.

STAAD Pro is the choice of many engineers for the flexible modeling environment, advanced culverts, culverts, petrochemical plants, tunnels, bridges, piles and many other structures for steel, concrete, wood, aluminum and cold-formed steel design.

3) PRIMAVERA (for Construction Management)

Primavera is a construction Planning and Scheduling program. It is preferred by almost 70 percent of all planning and planning professionals. MS Office also offers similar software called MS PROJECT.

4) REVIT (For Building Information Modeling)

Building Information Modeling can be called one of the biggest innovations that helped major infrastructure projects of the 21st century. BIM (Building Information Modeling) is an intelligent 3D model-based process that provides architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) professionals with insights and tools to plan, design, build and manage buildings and infrastructure more efficiently.

5) ETABS (For Design and Analysis)

ETABS is the ultimate integrated software package for structural analysis and design of buildings. Featuring 40 years of continuous research and development, this latest ETABS is unique 3D object-based modeling and visualization tools, incredibly fast linear and nonlinear analytical power, sophisticated and comprehensive design features for a wide variety of materials, and comprehensive graphic displays, reports, and users' analysis and Includes schematic drawings that quickly and easily decipher and understand design results.

6) SAP 2000 (for Design and Analysis)

SAP 2000 is another program that can be used for the design and analysis of structures. It is also used in many structural companies. SAP 2000 has a wide variety of templates to quickly launch a new model. SAP2000 contains parametric templates for some building types: Simple Beams, 3D Trusses, 3D Frames, Storage Ships, Ladders, Dam Structures and Pipes.

7) MS EXCEL (For Data Collection and Spreadsheet)

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet developed by Microsoft. It includes computation, graphic tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications. It has been a very common spreadsheet for these platforms, especially since version 5 in 1993. It is widely used in Civil Engineering for Data Collection, Surveys, Analysis and Design.

8) ARCGIS (For Measurement Information)

ArcGIS is software used in the Geographic Information System. It helps in creating thematic maps. ArcGIS for Desktop is the key to realizing the advantage of location awareness. It is a program that allows you to collect and manage data, create professional maps, make traditional and advanced spatial analysis and solve real problems.

9) 3DS Max (For Modeling)

3DS Max is an animation program used to create visuals. It is modeling and creation software used primarily for interior design and visual graphics. This software was developed by Autodesk. 3DS Max is a preferred and widely used application by many engineers with its advanced plug-in support, ease of use and powerful modeling capability.

10) MX Road (for road design and analysis)

MX Road is software used in road design. MXROAD combines 3D modeling technology with traditional workflows to improve design quality. Some workflows:

  • Survey and data collection for all field data types
  • Dynamic, interactive 3D modeling of highways and corridors
  • Land modeling and analysis
  • Interactive coordinate geometry
  • Profiles and sections
  • Geometric design
  • Regression analysis
