Netflix started streaming some of its videos with AV1 open source codecs. So what is this AV1 why use? AV1 Codec is a compression encoder just like MP4's codec H.264. For example, when an uncompressed video file is in avi format, even a few seconds of videos can take up 1 Gb of space. When you convert it to the most used MP4 format today, ie when you output it with H.264, the size of these files can be reduced to a few Mb. AV1 is a format like this but it will be very useful especially for mobile devices.
VP9 stands out as a codec developed for use on Android. It supports all Android devices. So Android phones can open a video with VP9 in any condition. VP9 offers low file size with high image quality. Alternatively, the AV1 codec is being developed as open source.
Netflix has started streaming for some of its videos with the AV1 codec for use on phones. Not all phones currently support this Codec. For example, phones with Mediatek Dimensity 1000 processors can play videos with this codec. But phones with Snapdragon 865 processors cannot play. AV1 is expected to replace almost all codecs in the near future.
Just like the VP9, it offers high image quality as well as low file size. According to Netflix, the image quality of AV1 is the same as VP9, but the file size is 20% lower. In this respect, it offers an important advantage in reducing data transfer. The videos will be played in AV1 format when data saving is activated in Netflix when it is supported more as hardware in the future.
